Altar Server Ministry Job Description

The altar servers help to create an atmosphere of reverence during the procession and help the presider during the mass so the presider may give his full attention to leading the congregation through the celebration.

Specific responsibilities are to carry the cross, the processional candles, hold the Sacramentary or other prayer book for the priest celebrant when he is not at the altar, carry the incense and censer, prepare the altar for the Liturgy of the Eucharist, help with hand washing of the priest during the preparation of the gifts, and assist the priest celebrant and deacon as necessary.

Altar servers may also be needed to serve for special liturgies, weddings, funerals, and Stations of the Cross.

In order to participate in this ministry, requirements include the following:

  1. Family should be registered as members of the parish;
  2. Received First Eucharist;
  3. Be of fourth grade school level student or older;
  4. Attend formation and training;
  5. Commit to serving at least one mass each month.
